JOE CULLEN produced a much-needed return to winning ways as he brushed aside Rob Owen 6-1 in the opening round of the International Darts Open in Riesa.
‘The Rockstar’ made a strong start to the season as he reached the final of the Players Championship One and won Event Five — his first title since 2022.
However, Cullen has struggled for consistency in recent weeks and was dumped out of the European Darts Open last month in a 6-0 thumping by Ryan Joyce in round one.
Former Masters champion Cullen had exited at the first hurdle in four consecutive Euro Tour tournaments for the first time in his career.
But Cullen hit six out of thirteen doubles and averaged 85.91 to dispatch an out of sorts Owen.
Word No. 23 Cullen admitted he was disappointed with his performance against the Welshman but was delighted to get the victory.
He said: “That was shiza. It was just about getting the win.
“I was rubbish there and got the 6-1 victory so I’m happy.
“It’s been such a strange year for me. I got into a final for the first event of year.
“I managed to win one then have been rubbish since.
“Rob Owen is a tricky customer. He did not play as well as he can but thankfully that worked for me.”
The Bradford thrower revealed the heavy loss to Joyce in Gottingen was tough to take.
He added: “I was terrible the other week in Gottingen and Ryan Joyce got the win.
“The 6-0 loss hurt. Ryan is amazing at doubles and I was terrible I gave him nothing to beat.”
Cullen has now set up a blockbuster second round clash with Nathan Aspinall who picked up his first Euro Tour title last month.
He said: “It’s so surprising that is his first European Tour win after all these years.
“It was a long time coming for Nathan. He has been playing well again.
“But if I bring my A game I stand a good chance of winning. I do back myself.”
