Morris chases dream double after stunning ProTour title

HONOURED Tommy Morris reckons he's completed part one of a dream double after his stunning PDC title triumph in Leicester.

The 34-year-old felt he'd welcomed himself to the world after becoming just the sixth player without a Tour Card to win a Players Championship crown.

Morris denied Wednesday winner Luke Humphries back-to-back wins at the Mattioli Arena with a fabulous 8-5 Final victory over the former World Champion in the final Players Championship event of 2026.

Having reached a Final in Den Bosch the previous week, the underdog went one better in the Midlands and swung open a host of doors in the process.

Morris is now in the Grand Slam, Players Championship Finals and World Championship before the end of the year.

Making Ally Pally was first on the target list for the term, but the next prize of a full-time Tour Card for 2027 is next on Tommy Gun's agenda.

He said: "Listen, it's my dream now. I had a target at the start of the year to reach the Worlds. My next target is to get a Tour Card and be with these boys full-time. They've made me feel so welcome.

"It's a breath of fresh air to be around them, let alone playing with them. I'm very honoured, especially to win something like this, because I've never won nothing. To win one of these PDC events, it's very overwhelming for me.

"I've beaten some great players this week and last week in Den Bosch. Putting the cherry on top was beating Luke and he's such a placid and lovely, humble guy. And to win like that, I was very like: Come on, welcome to the world, Tommy. So this is definitely the door opening for me and I'm very honoured.

"I don't even know what's happening. I'm not even in the room. That's the way I look at it. I think this is a dream, you know, for me to do this the way I have done.

"Today, I've just been rolling with it. I look at every other guy in this room and they've all got three darts. For me to come out top man today, I'm proud as punch. So roll on some more good memories and hopefully some more titles under my belt.

"Listen, I come from nothing. I haven't even got a Tour Card. For me to come here and do that. I'm just flying my flag for where I live, doing it for my family, I've not even known what's going on, I'm so happy."

Morris sealed the deal in style with a stunning 161 checkout to clinch the title and didn't let the big moment get to him as he said: "Just to nail it, to beat that guy and he is one of the guys that I really look up to. Last year, I was watching him on the telly and I said to myself: I can do that. So for me to beat him like that, I'm very, very proud of myself."

For Humphries, it was just a second defeat of the entire season at the venue having previously lifted three of his four Pro Tour wins and a Grand Prix at the Mattioli.

Missed doubles were the biggest factor in his Final loss, but Morris took full advantage and the big events looming are now circled in the calendar. He added: "I'm looking forward to it. Like I said, I come from nothing. I'm going to go with nothing. And I'm here and doing what I can while I can. So let's go."
