Van Veen glad to silence doubters after Nijman Matchplay thriller
Published 22 July 2026
GIAN VAN VEEN was glad to "silence" the doubters after beating in-form Wessel Nijman in a World Matchplay thriller.
The world No3 edged out his compatriot 14-12 at the Winter Gardens to reach the quarter-finals.
Van Veen, 24, averaged 96.95 and took out 50 per cent of his doubles in a dramatic clash which saw him recover from 11-10 down.
The Giant produced a stunning 148 checkout with Nijman sat on 64 to swing the match in his favour before holding his nerve to complete a huge victory.
Van Veen had endured a difficult spell of form and is yet to win a title this season, while Nijman arrived in Blackpool as one of the players to beat after collecting EIGHT pieces of silverware in 2026.
The pair were forced onto the stage around 30 minutes earlier than planned after Cameron Menzies was taken ill just three legs into his clash with Ross Smith.
Van Veen paid tribute to Menzies before reflecting on his own victory over his fellow Dutchman.
He said: “I don't have words at the moment. This was such an intense game.
“My consideration is to Cameron, for what happened in the first game. It was miserable to see and I hope he's doing good.
“It ruined our preparation for the game as well. But both of us delivered a really good game.”
Van Veen has already reached the World Championship final and World Masters semi-finals this year.
The European champion believes his pedigree and experience on the biggest stage were pivotal in helping him get over the line.
He added: “He has shown in 2026 what he is capable of. He has won so many ProTours and European Tours, playing phenomenal.
“But I know on the big stage I can do it as well. I know today was a big match for myself because everyone has been talking about him.
“So, I wanted to silence them and luckily I did.
“It doesn't matter if you don't do well on the ProTours or European Tour. As long as you do well in the majors, you are in good form.
“That is what I have been doing myself.
“Today was a massive confidence boost, so I am just going to enjoy the victory and I am looking forward to the quarter-finals.”
