PRICE REVEALS MIND GAMES FROM WRIGHT
03/06/2025 By Aaron Nijjar
GERWYN PRICE has lifted the lid on a cheeky bit of dark arts dished out by Peter Wright before their fiery PDC World Championship semi-final showdown.
‘The Iceman’ has reached the last four at Ally Pally twice — famously going on to win the title in 2021.
But it was the year before when things really boiled over between the Welshman and ‘Snakebite’.
Wright got the better of Price in a heated 6-3 semi-final triumph to book his place in the final — where he toppled Michael van Gerwen to land the first of his two world titles.
Now Price has revealed how Wright tried to get under his skin before they even stepped foot on the oche in London.
He told talkSPORT: “I can remember playing in a World Championship semi-final, I’m not sure what year it was, but it was Peter Wright.
“Even when we left the hotel, he raced me to the venue in his car. Not speeding but took a certain route that he wanted to get there before me.
“When I did turn up, he’s like, ‘Well, what took you so long? Going to be the same on the board?’
“Then he won the first set and tried to give it to me — and I was fuming. He really did get in my head.”
Seven-times major winner Price refused to shake hands with the Scot at the end of the bout.
After their match, Price took to social media to vent and wrote: “Banter is acceptable but not when players are fully focused trying to do a job, having just bombed the first set.
“I was upset with what Peter did and think it was out of order considering the circumstances.”
However, Price later issued a classy apology.
He explained: “I’ve had time to reflect on last night’s game.
“I’ve been in this position before in games but never in a World Championship semi-final. I overreacted to what Peter did after set one.
“I apologise to everyone who thinks I’ve done wrong and yeah maybe I was a bit OTT (over the top).”
World No. 11 Price returns to action this weekend at the Nordic Darts Masters in Copenhagen.
Former world cup winner Price then pairs up with Jonny Clayton for Wales at next week’s tournament in Frankfurt.
