NIKO SPRINGER won the Hungarian Darts Trophy after beating Danny Noppert 8-7 in the final.

‘Meenzer Bub’ clinched his first PDC senior crown in Budapest, just months after narrowly missing out with a runner-up finish at the Dutch Darts Championship.

Springer was 5-3 down in the final but fought back and hit double eight to edge past Noppert in a last-leg decider.

German ace Springer toppled six of the world’s top 20 en route to glory and says he’s thrilled to have booked his place at next month’s World Grand Prix.

He admitted: “I’m over the moon to be honest.

“I took my chances, so I’m very happy – I can’t believe it. You can see that the crowd is amazing, they were supporting me and I think I did a good job.

“My goal was to qualify for the World Championships, and I did that some months ago, so now I can play with some freedom.

“I have nothing to lose, and I’m very happy that I won.

“I never expected to be near the World Grand Prix, but I think with the win today I’m in the race. At the moment, I’m just happy.”

The 25-year-old kicked off his stunning run by toppling Gian van Veen with a 6-3 triumph in round two, producing clinical finishing as he landed six of his eight doubles despite his opponent averaging 105.

World No. 66 Springer then dispatched Damon Heta 6-1 in the last 16 and overcame Rob Cross 6-3 in the quarter-final.

Springer reeled off back-to-back 11-darters to see off Luke Humphries 6-4 in the semi-final with a 101.87 average and smashing in a lethal 130 checkout along the way.
