WRIGHT WARNS LITTLER MAY SKIP EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

PETER WRIGHT has questioned whether Luke Littler might skip next week’s European Championship after claiming the teen sensation “doesn’t like the German crowd.”

‘Snakebite’ secured his spot in Dortmund after surviving a last-leg thriller to beat home favourite Ricardo Pietreczko 6–5 in round two at the German Darts Championship.

The defending champ was made to graft but kept his cool, reeling off 15-dart holds in every leg he won and nailing six of his ten doubles — capped by a classy 137 finish in Hildesheim.

Wright then couldn’t resist a cheeky swipe at Littler amid talk the Warrington star might snub the European Championships following his troubled past with crowds in Germany.

He said: “I don’t care — I’ve already booked my flight because I knew I would be in.

“I’ve won it twice, like Rob Cross, and it would be nice to do it a third time.

“It will be interesting to see if Luke Littler turns up.

“Is he going to pull out? I don’t know because he don’t like the German crowd.

“I love you all though — never mind him.”

Eight-time major winner Wright has only managed one final on the ProTour and hasn’t gone beyond the fourth round in his last five majors this year.

The former world champion has endured a difficult campaign, slipping outside the world’s top 16 after a dip in form and consistency.

However, Wright insists he’s beginning to feel like his old self again after battling past Pietreczko to keep his title defence alive.

He added: “It is always going to be hard to play Ricardo in front of his home crowd.

“But this is my venue, this is where I win. The crowd is amazing and it’s nice to compete against the players again.

“Obviously I have been laying over and having my belly tickled.

“But I am on my way back and I want to play darts. These guys inspire me, and I am not too old for the game.”
