VAN GERWEN DEFENDS HUMPHRIES OVER AURA CLAIM

31/03/2026 By Aaron Nijjar

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN has defended Luke Humphries amid talk over whether the world No.2 has lost his aura.

‘Mighty Mike’ insisted it is not his place to judge such claims but made clear his respect for his rival remains as strong as ever.

The Dutchman believes facing Humphries is simply part of the challenge at the very top of the game.

But Van Gerwen warned that reputations count for nothing when it comes to delivering on the oche week in, week out.

He said: “Luke [Humphries] is a fantastic dart player. If someone loses his aura or anything, that’s not up to me to judge about that.

“I know Luke is a fantastic guy and an even better dart player. I have to battle against him.

“Whoever is No.1 or No.128 in the world I don’t care you need to face them and make sure you beat them week after week.”

The three-time world champion currently sits fourth in the Premier League table after winning Night One and reaching a further two finals.

MVG revealed ranking tournaments remain his top priority but he is still striving for perfection on the weekly roadshow.

He added: “Of course, why would it change? Ranking tournaments are really important for me, but I think they are important for everyone.

“There’s been a few ups and downs. A few games I’ve played so far, I think I should have and could have had more points.

“That is the way the Premier League is. Every week it is the same and you have to make the most of it.

“I won the first night, but I don’t think I have played any worse since I did that week. I am always really critical of myself.

“Of course you want to turn it around, that is why next week I am going to the ProTours to make sure I get some rhythm going, because that is really important at the moment.”

Van Gerwen returns to action today at the Players Championship Eight as he looks to pick up his first ProTour title of the season.
