18/09/2024 By Aaron Nijjar
Michael van Gerwen earns his first PDC ranking event win since the 7th of May 2023 by winning Players Championship 21 in Wigan.
Van Gerwen showcased his best performance in the final, defeating the in-form Dave Chisnall 8-4 with an impressive average just shy of 107.
The three-time PDC World Champion ended the 15-month drought by attributing his mindset and never give up attitude.
The Dutchman said: “Of course, it is difficult because I think I was close to winning ProTours before.
“I think I have been a couple of times close to winning the Euro Tour as well, but I didn’t do myself any justice, and that’s not the right thing to do for yourself.
“For me, the most important thing is I keep believing in my own ability and today I did.
“I spoke to Vince [Vincent van der Voort and he said] ‘You’re going to win today,’ and he’s yet to catch his flight; I’m flying tomorrow morning. I am also doing it now.
“It gives you joy, it gives you pleasure, and for me, I think a lot is possible.
“I’m not coming here to be just be a part of it. I want to win. I want to perform and do the right thing for myself.
“I know there is still a lot more to gain and.a lot more to fight for but everything needs its own pace.”
