CLAYTON HAS BEST MINDSET IN ELITE DARTS

JONNY CLAYTON has the best MINDSET in elite darts, according to ex-pro Matt Edgar.

World No. 5 Clayton won night three of the Premier League and reached the quarter-final of the World Championship earlier this year.

Edgar believes it is Clayton’s mentality at the oche that separates him from the rest.

The former Tour Card holder insists the Welshman’s laid-back approach gives him a crucial edge when the pressure is at its highest.

He told OLBG: “The thing that helps Jonny Clayton is his mind and mentality. If you are talking about Luke Humphries, who says, ‘Right, I want to find that one percent more so I can control things.’

“Jonny Clayton is the most relaxed darts player at elite level you will ever find.

“I literally was in a taxi with him for about thirty minutes the other day and all I heard from him was that darts is just a hobby and a pastime.

“To him, he is just the last of a pub generation of, ‘I play darts, it’s a good laugh. I enjoy myself and, oh, I just happen to be good at it.’

“He doesn’t realise how good he is, or his position in the world. He doesn’t realise how important and big a role he plays in the world of darts.

“To him, he is like, ‘Oh, this is great and it is fun.’”

Edgar reckons Gerwyn Price and Clayton have responded in style after being overlooked in the early hype for the Premier League.

‘The Ferret’ currently sits at the top of the table whilst fellow compatriot Price is fourth.

Luke Littler and Luke Humphries find themselves outside the play-off places as things stand.

Edgar added: “Everyone thought it was going to be Luke and Luke. If anyone was going to hijack it, it was going to be Van Veen.

“Well actually what we are seeing from the likes of Gerwyn Price over the last few weeks, a 117 average on the ProTour, and Jonny Clayton is that they have gone, ‘How are we the forgotten guys?’

“‘I’m a world champion and I have won a Premier League and you are ignoring us,’ and all of a sudden their levels have come up.”
