30 YEARS OF AWARD-WINNING JOURNALISM IN DARTS

DAZZLING DOBEY WINS PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP 33

CHRIS DOBEY clinched the Players Championship 33 crown after beating William O’Connor 8-6 in the final.

‘Hollywood’ secured his THIRD ProTour title of the year and the £15K top prize in Wigan.

World No. 11 Dobey also sealed a spot at the Grand Slam after failing to qualify last year.

Dobey was delighted to secure qualification for Wolverhampton and finally get the better of two recent bogey opponents.

He said: “I started to run out of steam and energy. I think the same for Willie. He let me in a couple of times which not a lot of people have today, and I took my chances.

“I’ve put some good performances in today when I have needed to. I got over the hoodoo of Damon Heta, it’s the first time I have beaten him.

“I hadn’t beaten Nathan [Aspinall] in a while so it’s nice to play well and get them.

“But to keep it consistent throughout the whole day I’m happy and that is me in the Grand Slam.

“It just goes to show you stick in and you get the rewards. I’ve played some good darts and I’m just happy to get over the line.

“I’m buzzing because I have missed out on the last couple of years so it’s nice to get in.”

Dobey reckons his form is coming together at the perfect time ahead of the Players Championship Finals and World Championships.

He added: “It’s the right time to start playing well. There is still so many tournaments to play and hopefully I can put myself in the mix.

“I’m constantly playing well and picking up titles on the floor.

“This is what I wanted a few years ago to get my floor game back where it should be and it’s at the top.”

Dobey insists the real target is attaining a second TV title.

He continued: “I want to start mixing it and winning TV titles. I can’t keep playing well on TV and not get anything for it.

“I’m just going to dig in and I keep believing I’m going to win one soon.

“I want to be back in with the top players in the world and playing them week in and week out.”

Dobey came from 6-5 down against O’Connor and reeled off three legs on the spin to seal the win.

Former Masters champ Dobey produced a clinical 81 checkout to level, before firing in a tidy 16-darter to move 7-6 ahead.

The 35-year-old held his nerve in the decider, taking out a 64 finish to wrap up the match.

Dobey fired in a 121 outshot and averaged a scintillating 107.55 to triumph 6-3 against Damon Heta at the last 16.

Bedlington thrower Dobey averaged a whopping 111.29 to dispatch Nathan Aspinall 6-2 in the quarter-final.

Dobey chucked in five maximums and averaged 94.67 to overcome Wessel Nijman 7-2 in the semi-final.
