HUMPHRIES CREDITS WEIGHT LOSS FOR SUCCESS

21/05/2025 By Aaron Nijjar

LUKE HUMPHRIES has credited a dramatic four-stone weight loss for transforming his career.

World No. 1 Humphries admits shedding the pounds gave him the energy and focus he needed to turn promise into dominance.

‘Cool Hand’ was title-less heading into the 2021 World Championship – only to suffer a brutal first-round exit that left his career at a crossroads.

But everything changed once he began his fitness journey and Humphries now boasts a whopping SEVEN major titles, including becoming the 2024 World Champion.

Cheshire thrower Humphries believes the weight loss was integral to his success on the oche.

He said: “I honestly do put my success down to the way I lost weight.

“I was very fatigued when I was overweight. Darts is a non-physical sport but you’re on your feet all the time.

“When you carry any excess weight, it just tires you out.

“I felt like when I lost the weight, I was much more energetic, exercising more and could cope with the longer days much better.

“It was the missing ingredient in my game – I was always very good but not good enough for long enough.”

The transformation was simple – but effective.

Daily 30-minute sessions on an exercise bike and a strict focus on nutrition were enough to change his game – and his life.

He added: “The best way to put it into perspective is that I started losing weight in January 2021 and by the start of March I made my first major final.

“A week later I made another final on the pro tour and another one six weeks later. I was already noticing things that weren’t happening before.

“All of a sudden, I was making finals and performing at a higher level more consistently.

“It was a slow progression up the ranks, but I noticed the changes really quickly.”

Humphries returns to action tomorrow in the Premier League and will face Rob Cross on Night 16 at Sheffield.
