HUMPHRIES HITS BACK AT CALLS FOR NEW RANKING SYSTEM

LUKE HUMPHRIES says calls for a new darts ranking system only come from players “not at the top” after Michael van Gerwen pushed for a switch to a points format.
The PDC Order of Merit ranks players based on the prize money they earn from tournaments over a rolling two-year period.
Three-times World Champ Michael van Gerwen has argued the sport should copy tennis and switch back to a points-based system, giving bigger weighting to major titles.
World No2 Humphries argued the debate is pointless because nothing would change as he and Luke Littler would still dominate.
He said: “That’s what someone would say if they are not at the top. That’s what someone would say if they are not me and Luke [Littler].
“You would say let’s have a points system because it helps it subtract to you because it’s in your favour.
“I don’t really care if it’s points based or money, whatever it is I don’t care. If it was points based, we would still be the top two, I don’t think anything changes, does it?
“I’ve made 15 major finals in the last two years. If you did it on points it would not be any different.
“Whatever way you do it I don’t care. Luke would still be number one and I would be number two.”
Gerwyn Price sparked a debate after expressing concerns about the PDC’s decision to double the World Championship winner’s prize from £500,000 to £1million next year, warning that it could “skew the rankings.”
‘Cool Hand’ begins his campaign at Ally Pally next month against Ted Evetts on December 13.
Cheshire thrower Humphries is chasing a second Sid Waddell crown after beating wonderkid Littler in the 2024 showpiece.
