MANBY READY TO DITCH THE TROWEL

CHARLIE MANBY hopes his days on the building site are finally behind him after sealing a PDC Tour Card.

The bricklayer from Huddersfield, 20, is hoping to quit his day job, having secured his future on the professional circuit in Milton Keynes on Sunday night.

‘Champagne Charlie’ had already pocketed a hefty £60,000 for his run to the fourth round of last month’s World Championship before being halted by Gian van Veen.

Manby revealed the backing he has received from his boss and believes sponsorship interest could soon allow him to step away from bricklaying altogether.

He told talkSPORT: “He’s sound. He has always been into darts. He is over the moon for me as well, which is always good.

“There are things lined up for next year, sponsors available and stuff like that which will pay decent money.

“So, hopefully I don’t have to pick my trowel up as much — or at all.”

Manby is ready to splash the cash on a new motor following his breakthrough run at Ally Pally

He added: “It’s a lot of money for a young lad, but at the same time you have to think about your future and everything like that.

“I do need a new car — that could be one of the first things. I’ve got a Hyundai i20 at the minute.

“Ever since I got that two years ago, I’ve always wanted a Hyundai i20 N.

“So, I’ll be looking at a few of them, I think.”

The Huddersfield thrower is keeping his feet on the ground as he targets a move into the world’s top 64 over the next year.

He continued: “I think because I’m still young and there’s plenty of time for me, I’ll be around in this game for a long number of years.

“I’m just going to give it a good shot this year and see what happens. I went into the Worlds telling myself it was a free shot.

“Then I went into Q-School with people backing me.

“My manager just said to me to see it as a free shot — relax, there’s no pressure on my shoulders.

“That’s mainly what I want to do this year. Hopefully, the year after that, I’ll be able to push on, break into the top 64 and climb the rankings.”
