MUNYUA: DROGBA WAS MY HERO
13/04/2026 By Aaron Nijjar
DAVID MUNYUA has revealed football legend Didier Drogba was his childhood idol after making history at the PDC World Championship.
The Kenyan ace became the first player from his country to win a match at Ally Pally, stunning Mike De Decker 3-2 in a thrilling first-round clash.
‘Why Not?’ is a boyhood Chelsea fan and even visited Stamford Bridge for his heroics last year.
Munyua explained that Drogba helped ignite the competitive fire that now drives him on the oche, hailing the striker as a lasting role model in his career.
He told Oche180: “I think it was a big dream, especially being at Stamford Bridge.
“When we were growing up, even now, it’s very big to not only just appear, just to watch the game on TV. That’s usually a big deal.
“Now being into stadium and watch a game live, that was a dream come true.
“And I think there was a lot of people inspired to just associate themselves with sport, either football, darts, all this.
“I think it inspired a lot of people as well and I’m happy about that.
“Yeah, for sure. [Drogba] was a huge inspiration, especially when we were young.
“Everybody would nickname themselves Didier Drogba and this really pushed us in the field. And also we loved watching him play.
“I think me going to Stamford Bridge also really did well, especially for the youth who are trying to push their sporting career.
“When they saw me there, they’re like, ‘This is amazing. It’s possible. We can also be part of this.’”
The Vet is set to team up with fellow compatriot Peter Wachiuri at the MODUS Super Series International tournament from April 20–25.
And a day later, Munyua has not ruled out taking time out to watch his beloved Blues take on Leeds United in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.
He added: “Why not? I would love to, of course.
“I’ll be here this week and I’ll be participating in Pairs, so I’ll still be around.
“I don’t know which day especially Chelsea is going to be in Wembley, but I’m hoping maybe something might pop up.”
