O’CONNOR DEMANDS PREMIER LEAGUE SHAKE-UP

27/03/2026 By Aaron Nijjar

WILLIAM O’CONNOR has called for the return of Premier League challengers.

The concept has previously produced some iconic moments, handing local talents a one-night shot in front of partisan crowds.

Talk of a shake-up has resurfaced following the chaotic night in Dublin, where a quarterfinal was scrapped on Night Seven after Gian van Veen withdrew due to kidney stones.

O’Connor pointed to his own unforgettable outing in the capital as proof the format works, having featured in 2021 before suffering a 7–4 defeat to Michael van Gerwen.

Thousands of fans inside the 3Arena joined in full voice, belting out “Zombie” during his walk-on, creating a spine-tingling atmosphere.

He said: “When I was there, I had a superb reception, probably one of the best ever.

“It’s definitely something that could be talked about. Whether they’ll introduce it or not, I don’t know, but it’s worth discussing.

“Especially if a player pulls out — why not have a local player? It makes sense not to have a bye.

“Whether there are points on the line or not, at least fill the void for the crowd and give them something to cheer about. It makes sense to me, but I’m not in charge.”

World No.41 O’Connor refused to criticise the crowd, admitting he didn’t watch the action unfold but insisted he would have withdrawn from other tournaments for the chance to play.

He added: “I didn’t watch it, so I can’t give my reaction. I know when I was there, I had a superb reception — probably one of the best ever.

“That’s all I can say. I wasn’t there last night, so I don’t know. Yeah, absolutely. I’d have been out the gap. Bye-bye Euro Tour.

O’Connor enjoyed a strong 2025 campaign, reaching a ProTour final and the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
