SULJOVIC DEMANDS VENUE SWITCH FOR WORLD CHAMPS

MENSUR SULJOVIC believes the World Darts Championship has outgrown Alexandra Palace and should be moved to a bigger venue.

Alexandra Palace has been the major event’s home since its 2008 move from the Circus Tavern in Essex.

Former Champions League winner Suljovic believes the arena is too small to host the annual competition, with Germany mooted as a possible new location.

Suljovic says the sport’s explosion in popularity means the iconic North London hall can no longer cope with demand.

He told Laola.at: “The Ally Pally only holds 3,000 spectators, that’s not enough. Many friends of mine want to come and can’t get tickets.

“Maybe somewhere else in England. I played the Premier League, there are lots of nice places. Saudi Arabia?

“I have nothing against it. But it would be more traditional in England, just in a bigger venue.

“Germany would be a good place for the World Championship. There is huge potential there. Germany has done a lot for the sport of darts.”

Austrian thrower Suljovic has struggled on the oche this year after failing to make a single quarter-final on the ProTour for the first time since 2012.

World No.60 Suljovic’s best outing this campaign came at the UK Open where he reached the fifth round before losing 11-3 to William O’Connor.

The 53-year-old is hoping to have a good run at Ally Pally in his 17th World Championship appearance next month.

He added: “I can’t complain. It could have been worse. The year started well, then I slowed down a bit.

“Now I have to focus on the World Championship again.

“I was tired and had health problems. I hope to be in top shape in 2026.

“The pressure is always huge. As soon as I get to London, everything starts all over again. Like a beginner, unfortunately.

“A few years ago, I was top 16 and the media wanted to see you in the final.

“It’s different today. It always depends on your condition on the day, how you slept, how you feel.

“At my first World Championships I had nothing to lose. Now it feels similar again.”
