VAN VEEN HITS BACK AT WADE OVER REMARK

GIAN VAN VEEN has hit back at James Wade after being referred to as “that guy” by the 10-times major winner.
World No. 18 Van Veen was defeated 16-13 by ‘The Machine’ in the quarter-final of the World Matchplay.
Aldershot slinger Wade ruffled Van Veen’s feathers after he called him “that guy” when asked about the win in an interview post-match.
The 23-year-old admits he felt the remark was “condescending” from Wade.
He said: “I didn’t think it was very nice.
“It’s fine if he doesn’t see me as a top talent but calling me ‘that guy’ felt a bit condescending.
“I’ve always said Wessel Nijman is more talented than me.
“But I’m in the top 20 now because of fighting spirit—and that counts for something, too.”
Former pro Vincent van der Voort was quick to back his countryman and insists Van Veen has all the tools to be a major force in the sport.
He added: “With Gian, the whole package is right. He’s mentally strong, stable, technically sound.
“Not everyone has Littler’s raw talent, but you can still become a top player.”
‘The Giant’ is enjoying a breakout season as he won his first ProTour title at the Players Championship Six where he beat world No. 1 Luke Humphries 8-3 in the final.
Van Veen also came agonisingly close to claiming a maiden Euro Tour crown, losing out to Michael van Gerwen in the German Grand Prix earlier this year.
