PETER WRIGHT’S hopes of adding more titles to his glittering career have been questioned.

Former pro Vincent van der Voort admitted he was surprised after hearing ‘Snakebite’ speak about his ambition to reach 55 career trophies and land another big TV crown.

World No.32 Wright has failed to reach a quarter-final in his last ten PDC premier events and did not register a tournament win last season for the first time since 2011.

Van der Voort believes the Scot’s target is a long way from being achievable based on his recent results at the oche.

He said on the Darts Draait Door Podcast: “I saw that interview with Peter Wright and I was really taken aback.

“He said he’s on 49 titles and still wants to win a few more, that he wants to finish on 55 and maybe still take a Grand Prix or a Grand Slam.

“Then I think, “What are you talking about?” He’s so far away from that right now.”

The Dutchman stressed his comments were not criticism of Wright’s career, but a reflection of how tough it is to stay competitive at the top level.

He added: “I don’t mean that negatively — he’s had an incredible career.

“He’s won big tournaments, reached plenty of finals, is a two-time world champion.

“He has won the World Matchplay, the World Cup twice, the European Championship, and he’s been world number one.

“But if you ask whether he’ll win the Grand Prix again — that’s going to be difficult.”

Despite his doubts, Van der Voort insists that only the player themselves should decide when it is time to retire.

He continued: “That’s what Wright said as well — people always say he should stop, but that’s entirely his own decision.

“It’s the same with Van Barneveld. Players like that get to decide for themselves when they stop. As long as they still enjoy it, they should keep going.”
