GURNEY STUNNED AS FAN THROWS IPHONE ON STAGE

DARYL GURNEY was left stunned when a fan allegedly hurled an IPHONE onto the stage during his post-match interview.

The Northern Irishman had just brushed aside local qualifier Dawid Robak 6-1 in the opening round of the Poland Masters.

PDC Europe master of ceremonies Philip Brzezinski was speaking to ‘Superchin’ about his convincing win when both abruptly stopped mid-answer and looked down in disbelief.

An object had landed on the stage.

For a split second there was confusion before Gurney, quick as ever, broke the tension with a joke.

He quipped: “I think you have a phone call.”

Brzezinski then confirmed the bizarre interruption, telling the crowd: “Someone has just thrown an iPhone at us.”

World No.23 Gurney now faces Ross Smith in Saturday night’s second round in Krakow, boasting a perfect record in their last three Euro Tour clashes.

He added: “I think Ross, last year, with the tragedy of his mother, I feel like that affected his darts.

“I feel like this year he will get over that, and he showed it in the World Masters with how well he played against Jimmy van Schie.

“I feel like he will be a really big force to be reckoned with in the PDC. He deserves to be in the top 16.

“Hopefully I don’t give him too many compliments and he thinks, ‘Oh, this is going to be easy, Daryl is waxing this.’

“Hopefully I am a lot better tomorrow and more consistent. I am looking forward to the game.”

Gurney enjoyed an impressive campaign last year, reaching the quarter-finals of both the European Championship and the Players Championship Finals.

The 39-year-old also celebrated major success on the international stage, lifting the PDC World Cup of Darts for Northern Ireland alongside Josh Rock.
