HUMPHRIES: DREAM COME TRUE
19/11/2023 By Phil Lanning
LUKE HUMPHRIES denied he was the best player in the world despite winning the Grand Slam of Darts.
The World No.4 took his second major title in a month after beating Rob Cross 16-8 in Wolverhampton last night (Sunday).
Humphries, 28, hit a stunning 105 average in a high quality win to take the £150,000 top prize and Eric Bristow trophy.
He said: “I feel like a new player. Lots of people on social media say I have no personality. I don’t care as long as I’m picking up trophies!
“I’m a lucky boy, I’ve always dreamed of being up on this stage. I’m very blessed I’m a two-time major time, I just don’t believe it!
“Best player in the world? Maybe today and maybe the last couple of months I am.
“But there’s so many good players on this tour. I can be the best today and then not next week.
“This has been a journey, it’s not been easy. I’ve lost a lot of weight and battled a lot of things in my head to get myself to these moments. These are the things that make me believe and appreciate being here more than ever. I think I can get a lot better.
“My dad is the person who made me who I am today. He sacrificed so much. I love you dad. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be here with silverware.”
It was a one-sided affair despite Cross hitting the highest-ever final losing average of 103.61. He also delivered a stunning early 170 finish but had no answer to Humphries.
Cross, who won £70k, said: “The best man won on the night. He was quality. I’ll come back and we will go again.
“To lose is a bit hurtful. Luke is the best player in the world right now.”
