LUKE HUMPHRIES has revealed how a freak finger injury disrupted his Premier League night two final against Luke Littler in Glasgow.
‘Cool Hand’ was beaten 6-5 by the current World champion Littler.
World No.1 Humphries suffered the cut during practice just before the final when he caught his finger on the wire of the board while retrieving his darts.
Speaking on Charlie Murphy’s YouTube channel, Humphries explained the bizarre incident.
He said: “I caught it on the wire. I was throwing in practice, went to pick my dart out, and just caught it on the corner for no random reason, and it pulled the skin.
“All three were in there so literally all I done was picked them out and it just caught.”
The seven-time Major winner delivered outstanding performances prior to the incident, averaging over 106 in his quarter-final win against Chris Dobey and recording another ton-plus average in a 6-4 semi-final victory over Gerwyn Price.
However, the deep cut on his finger proved troublesome in the final, significantly affecting his game as Humphries averaged under 94.
He admitted: “It don’t hurt it’s just been bleeding. I couldn’t stop it last night [Thursday]. I was thinking surely after 10 minutes it would stop but it didn’t. Last night cause of that it was so hard to throw. It was a decent final. When you play it you have to enjoy it.”
The Cheshire thrower also spoke about a recent change in his darts setup, explaining how a fresh set of arrows has improved his morale.
He revealed: “The new change in darts have given me a new lease of life. They are making me feel good. They are the same set just new. Sometimes I would use a set for three years and get to a point where they have seen their day. They are not so grippy anymore.
“Obviously I don’t have that much grip on my dart anyway but when the grips just gone like when it’s hot you can’t grip them and when it’s cold you can’t. I thought it was time for a change.”
Humphries remains top of the Premier League table after reaching two consecutive finals, having won Night one in Belfast.
Looking ahead, he faces Stephen Bunting next on Thursday in Dublin as he aims to maintain his strong start to the tournament.
