MUNYUA EFFECT EARNS AFRICA TWO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SPOTS
24/02/2026 By Aaron Nijjar
THE PDC reacted to the ‘Munyua effect’ by handing Africa TWO guaranteed spots at the 2026/27 World Darts Championship.
David Munyua broke new ground in December 2025 as the first Kenyan to compete and win at Ally Pally when he beat Mike De Decker in round one.
The two places will be awarded via the African Darts Group, with a Northern African Qualifier and a Southern African Qualifier deciding who heads to the major tournament.
It’s a huge moment for the sport’s global expansion and a direct reward for the impact Munyua made on the biggest stage of them all.
The Premier event will feature a massive 128-player field battling for the famous Sid Waddell Trophy and a staggering £5million prize fund.
The top 40 players from the PDC Order of Merit and the top 40 non-qualified players from the ProTour Rankings will qualify for the sport’s flagship show.
And the remaining 48 places are allocated to International Qualifiers. Five places will go to the highest-ranked players on the PDC Asian Tour, with a further two spots reserved for the Asian Championship finalists.
The PDC China Champion will also qualify, alongside one representative each from the Indian and Japanese qualifiers.
A further five places will be awarded to players on the Championship Darts Corporation circuit, while three more spots are up for grabs for competitors from the Nordic and Baltic region.
In addition, the top three players on both the Development Tour and Challenge Tour Orders of Merit will seal their spots, alongside the PDC World Youth Champion.
A minimum of two players will progress from the Tour Card Holder Qualifier to book their place in London.
Four women will once again be guaranteed a spot at Alexandra Palace, with the Women’s World Matchplay champion joined by the top three players on the Women’s Series Order of Merit.
All 128 players will begin their campaign in round one, with the 32 seeded stars and those ranked 33–64 drawn at random on one side of the bracket to face the remaining 64 qualifiers.
The 2026/27 World Darts Championship will get underway in December before reaching its climax in January.
