NICHOLSON FEARS FOR WALES AFTER PRICE WORLD CUP WITHDRAWAL

WALES look more “vulnerable” without Gerwyn Price heading into the World Cup of Darts, according to Paul Nicholson.
The Iceman decided to take time away from the hectic schedule, handing world No61 Nick Kenny a surprise call-up alongside Jonny Clayton.
Former world champ Price and Clayton formed one of the most successful partnerships in the history of the event, winning the title in 2020 and 2023 while also reaching three further finals.
Ex-pro Nicholson believes Cymru still have enough quality to come through Group C against Lithuania and Thailand despite losing their biggest star.
He told Sporting Life: “Wales should still come through the group despite the absence of Gerwyn Price.
“Jonny Clayton brings huge experience and Nick Kenny has enjoyed some excellent moments over the last year.
“Lithuania’s hopes rest heavily on Darius Labanauskas.
“We know what he can do, but he needs much more support around him if they’re going to challenge Wales.
“Thailand have talent, but I still think Wales have enough quality to progress.”
But Nicholson believes Wales lack the firepower to go deep into the competition.
He added: “The concern for Wales comes later in the tournament.
“Without Price they look more vulnerable than they have in previous years, and while I expect them to top the group, I’m not convinced they’ll make a deep run.”
Kenny has made a steady start to the season, reaching the last 32 in three Players Championship events.
The 33-year-old also enjoyed a memorable run at last year’s World Championship, where he reached the third round after victories over Stowe Buntz and Raymond van Barneveld.
