GERWYN PRICE has called for changes to the PDC ranking system following the decision to increase the World Championship winner’s prize money from £500,000 to £1 million.
World No.12 Price won his second Players Championship title of the year yesterday (Monday) in Leicester after he beat Ian White 8-4 in the final of Event Nine.
‘The Iceman’ believes the increase could unfairly impact the PDC Order of Merit, with the winner of the Ally Pally prize pot potentially holding the top spot for an extended period.
Seven-time major winner Price said: “It’s only one tournament heavy.
“As bad as my last year has been, even though I’ve started well this year, I could go on to win the World Championship and be world number one.”
While Price welcomed the financial boost, he argued that the weighting of ranking points needs to be adjusted to maintain fairness across the tour.
He added: “They’ve upped the Worlds, but they need to up everything else—otherwise, they need to change the points.
“It’s not fair if someone wins the Worlds and they are world number one for two years.
“I will happily have the million. But they need to change the ranking points.”
The World Championship is the most prestigious event on the PDC calendar, and the prize increase reflects the sport’s growing global appeal.
