VAN GERWEN BINS GREEN JERSEY FOR FUTURE

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN has binned his iconic bright green shirt for the foreseeable future after claiming it was “broken” and “didn’t do the job anymore.”

Three-time world champion Van Gerwen made his return to the oche at the US Darts Masters in New York last week sporting a slick black jersey with bold green trims.

‘Mighty Mike’ secured an impressive 6-1 win against Leonard Gates in round one of the World Series event with a 100 average and 60 percent hit on the doubles after a month away from competitive action.

But the Dutchman lost 6-3 to Gerwyn Price in the quarter-final at the Big Apple.

Former UK Open finalist and close friend Vincent van der Voort admits the shirt switch marks a symbolic fresh start for MVG as he battles to revive his once unstoppable form.

He said: “This is going to be his regular shirt for the foreseeable future.

“That old shirt, according to him, just didn’t do the job anymore.

“He said it was broken—done. This new look represents something bigger.”

World No. 3 Van Gerwen first tested the darker look at the Masters earlier this year — and the positive reaction planted the seed for a total kit overhaul.

Van der Voort added: “He wore a black shirt then as well and got a lot of compliments.

“So maybe that stuck with him. Plus, black is more slimming—and he’s lost quite a bit of weight, which helps. He really liked this design but made sure to keep those signature green accents.

“He said he hadn’t been performing in that old shirt, so it had to go.

“He’s working hard to get back in shape. We just need a bit of patience before he hits top form again—but hopefully not too much.”

47-time major winner Van Gerwen claimed his 38th Euro Tour title at the German Darts Championship in April.

However, the 36-year-old has not made a semi-final in any of the nine Players Championship events he has featured in 2025.

‘The Green Machine’ failed to make Finals night of the Premier League at the O2 for just the second time in 13 appearances.
