VAN GERWEN SET TO MISS PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN is set to MISS the Players Championship Finals for the first time in his career.
World No. 3 Van Gerwen withdrew from the Players Championship 27 in Hildesheim, casting serious doubt over his chances of making the major in November.
The Dutchman has competed in every Players Championship Finals since 2009, lifting the title seven times, most recently in 2022.
But after this year’s struggles, that impressive run is now under serious threat.
‘Mighty Mike’ was eliminated in the first round of Event 26 yesterday after losing 6-2 against Callan Rydz.
In 12 Players Championship events, Van Gerwen has crashed out in eight first-round matches and looks set to finish the year without a single event win for the first time since 2011.
Three-times World Champ Van Gerwen is now 101st in the Players Championship Order of Merit with seven events remaining.
MVG sits around £9,000 short of a top 64 spot — a deficit that could even widen by the end of the day.
