MICHAEL VAN GERWEN has been ruled out of Glasgow’s Premier League showpiece.
The Dutch hero will miss his scheduled clash with Luke Littler having been forced to withdraw from Night Three at the Hydro.
Van Gerwen currently tops the standings after a win in Newcastle and Final appearance in Antwerp, but has been denied an opportunity to extend the advantage due to a medical issue.
Littler will now go straight through to a semi-final meeting with either Gerwyn Price or Jonny Clayton after PDC chiefs confirmed that the seven-time winner will miss out on the Scottish date.
Van Gerwen said on his social media: “Sorry Glasgow. Unfortunately I had to withdraw from the Premier League tonight. Appreciate all the support.”
A PDC statement read: “Michael van Gerwen has withdrawn from Thursday’s BetMGM Premier League action in Glasgow due to illness.
“The seven-time Premier League champion has been ruled out of night three at the OVO Hydro tonight due to a medical issue.”
Van Gerwen’s fellow Dutchman Vincent van der Voort first alerted the prospect of an issue on the Darts Draait Door podcast this week when he stated the World No.4 was on antibiotics.
Van Gerwen’s scheduled quarter-final opponent, Luke Littler, subsequently receives a Bye through to the semi-finals under tournament rules, taking two league points and +1 leg difference.
Van Gerwen receives no league points and -6 leg difference.
