WEBSTER RECALLS BIZARRE FARTGATE CONTROVERSY WITH MEULENKAMP

DARREN WEBSTER admits it “absolutely reeked” after accusing opponent Ron Meulenkamp of farting on stage.
The two-time World Championship quarter-finalist says he was the first person to raise the issue during a bizarre MODUS Super Series clash two years ago.
Demolition Man raced into a 3-0 lead before Meulenkamp won four consecutive legs to seal victory.
But Webster stormed off without shaking his opponent’s hand amid allegations that Meulenkamp had passed wind during the contest.
Webster maintains the smell was impossible to ignore from the moment he arrived on stage.
He told Modus: “I walked in there, walked up the corner and it absolutely reeked.
“I looked at the ref and went, ‘Are you drunk?’”
The incident quickly spiralled, with Webster admitting the pressure of the match contributed to his reaction.
He added: “I did say a couple of things I shouldn’t have done but I took it down immediately.”
What followed left Webster stunned as the story exploded beyond the darts world and into the national media.
He continued: “Everyone was going, ‘Darren, you’ve done it again.
“I was like, ‘What? He’s got me in the newspaper? What for? Him trumping?’”
Webster enjoyed a stellar career spanning more than two decades, reaching the semi-finals of the Players Championship Finals and claiming a ProTour title.
The 57-year-old lost his Tour Card in 2024 following a dip in form and a growing loss of passion for the game.
Now, the Welshman has rediscovered his love for darts after his son-in-law took up the sport and gradually tempted him back to the oche.
He said: “I said to myself: I have done it for 23 years now. I just need a break.
“I wasn’t interested in coming back or doing any more darts.
“Now, for me, I don’t have to win anymore. I can be happy, come here and want to win a game of darts with no worries.”
