WRIGHT CRASHES OUT OF TOP 32

PETER WRIGHT has crashed out of the world’s top 32 for the first time in 15 years.

‘Snakebite’ has lost all FOUR of his opening round games on the ProTour this season.

The Eight-time major winner was defeated 6-4 by Thomas Lovely in Players Championship Four at Wigan.

Wright, 55, has struggled badly for form, failing to post an average above 86.00 in any match this year as his ranking plunged to its lowest point since 2011.

The former world champion has also slipped to Scottish No.3 and is currently out of contention for a World Cup spot.

Wright could miss the event for the first time since 2020, although he has previously hinted he would be happy to sit it out, despite having lifted the trophy twice.

He said: “To be honest, I’m not fussed. I told Gary [Anderson] last year I don’t want to play in the World Cup anymore because the past two years, I don’t think the way I’ve played in the World Cup, I deserve to be in it.

“Cameron Menzies was the better player in those two years and maybe, you know, I should have stepped aside.

“But it was just like the loyalty of wanting to win another one with a great Gary Anderson.”

Wright remains a true legend of the sport, but his recent performances have dipped, having failed to reach the semi-finals of a ranked major event over the past two years.
