PETER WRIGHT can “kick on” back to form after being snubbed from the Premier League.
The double world champ will not be in the 17-week tournament for the first time in 11 years.
But according to Sky Sports pundit Mark Webster, Snakebite will use the extra time to rise back to the top of the sport after an excellent World Championship.
He said: “Peter’s got to take the positives. He looked nervy in the second round of the Worlds but he looked far more like his old self in the next couple.
“Especially in the Luke Humphries game, his finishing was unbelievable.
“He just fell a bit short against Stephen Bunting. That has been the issue for him, that consistency in big tournaments.
“But getting to the quarter-finals of the World Championship has got to be a big tick in the box.
“This year he can now concentrate and work on his game. He’s now not in the Premier League and he can use that time wisely.
“But he has already started the year on a high by reaching the Worlds quarter-finals.
“He’s been constantly falling down the rankings but now he’s gone up some places.
“The Wesley Plaisier game was huge. If his double six hadn’t have gone in, he would have been embroiled in a deciding set. That was a big relief for him, then he knew he could try and produce his best stuff.
“Most people thought that Jermaine Wattimena was just going to roll him over. But Peter played brilliantly.
“But the big one was how he played against Luke Humphries. I liked his demeanour and his finishing.”
Wright, 54, has suffered a miserable two years of finishing bottom of the league.
But his incredible work ethic can help him return to top form, according to Webster.
He added: “I bumped into Peter last year in the Premier League. He put on a brave face but I could see that he was hurting.
“He’s a really good guy and I’m delighted for him that he got a good run at the Ally Pally.
“He can kick on now. He’s got the Masters early doors this year. I don’t know whether he’ll be at the World Series events but there will still be a lot of darts for Peter.
“Peter cut down on his ProTours a couple of years ago and he admitted he got that wrong.
“He worked so hard to get to the top and the titles that he has won. That was all down to pure dedication.”
