ASPINALL LANDS GERMAN DARTS GRAND PRIX TITLE

NATHAN ASPINALL admits he has rediscovered his love for darts after winning the German Grand Prix.

World No.14 Aspinall becomes the ninth player to win four European Tour titles and also pockets the £35,000 top prize in Munich after beating Danny Noppert 8-5 in the final.

‘The Asp’ fired in a stunning 106.40 average as he thrashed Kevin Doets 7-2 in the semi-finals, having earlier seen off Andrew Gilding 6-4 in the last eight.

He said: “After getting past Andrew, the two guys that I knew I was going to play I have not got the best of records against as of late.

“Certainly Kevin and Danny as well. To get one over Kevin was fantastic, but to play Danny in the final — he is so good. He is such a fantastic dart player. I am 4-1 up and he battled back to make it 5-4.

“I was like, oh my God, what am I doing? I found that fighting spirit this week. I did an interview on Saturday saying I am not enjoying my darts.

“I am trying to find that love for the game again. Munich, you have given me the love for darts again because you have been mega.

“I have enjoyed my darts and I played pretty decent. I won, come on!”

The two-time major winner scraped through round two yesterday evening after surviving a match dart against Ricardo Pietreczko.

He added: “If my grandma had b******, she would have been my grandad.

“These things happen. You need a bit of luck in these tournaments. He missed that dart to win.

“I had an early night for once and it paid dividends today. I played fantastic all day.”

Aspinall admitted it has been a tough start to the year as he fought to stay motivated after missing out on the Premier League.

He continued: “I’ve had a rubbish start to the year. I have had a lot of knockbacks not getting the Premier League, trying to keep myself motivated.

“Danny is in the same situation as me. You are trying to keep yourself motivated and sometimes it is hard.

“Nights like tonight are why we play this game. I am f-ing buzzing. I will be celebrating with my boys over there.

“I will probably miss my flight in the morning, so sorry babe.”
