LUKE HUMPHRIES has revealed that a new house was his first major purchase after winning the World Championship last year.
World No. 1 Humphries defeated Luke Littler, then 16, in the final and it was his first Ally Pally triumph which landed him a major £500k cheque.
However, ‘Cool Hand’ has been careful with his money, pointing out that almost half of it is taxed.
Seven-time major winner Humphries only recently purchased his house.
He said: “When that money goes into your business account, you can’t just withdraw 200 grand of it because you get taxed on it massively.
“For me, it’s important to be sensible. What I have done is bought a new house, which cost a lot, a lot of money.
“Because of the guarantees that the half a million gave me, I was able to buy a house that was worth incredible amounts of money.
“That would probably be the biggest purchase. But obviously I didn’t buy it straight away, it’s taken me until now to guarantee that I can afford to pay for it.”
It was put to Humphries that buying a house is better than purchasing Stone Island gear, to which the Leeds-born star quipped: “Yeah, I’ve got a few, just in case you need it every now and then!”
The Cheshire thrower returns to action today (Sunday) and faces two-time major winner Michael Smith in the last 16 of the European Darts Trophy.
