WRIGHT BACKS SCOTLAND TO ACHIEVE WORLD CUP GLORY

12/06/2025 By Aaron Nijjar

PETER WRIGHT insists Scotland’s “old codgers” still have the firepower to cause a major upset at the World Cup of Darts.

‘Snakebite’ will line up alongside Gary Anderson for an eighth time as they begin their campaign in the second round on Saturday in Frankfurt.

World No. 16 Wright has won the tournament in 2019 and 2021.

But Wright says the pressure of playing for your country is unlike anything else.

He said: “It’s amazing and scary as well.

“When you are up on that stage representing your country, you are more nervous in this tournament than any other.

“I don’t know how Gary feels but I’m sure he is as well.

“There’s so much pressure and he always puts me first to throw as well!”

Eight-times major winner Wright has been on a good run of form as he reached the final of Players Championship 11 and made three Euro Tour quarter-finals this year.

However, the Livingston thrower is yet to get his hands on silverware in 2025 and has not won a major crown since the European Championship two years ago.

Still, Wright is confident he can add another trophy to his already stacked cabinet.

He added: “Gary is playing really well at the moment, he is in a happy place.

“I’m getting there — and in this tournament I will prove that.

“Me and Gaz have got plenty of experience in the World Cup and I’m thinking we will do really well.

“I don’t think anyone will be talking about us to be honest.

“We’re just the two old codgers that want to play darts still.

“But I think we can upset a lot of them.

“If we turn up, everyone will be in trouble.”

England’s teenage sensation Luke Littler and world No.1 Luke Humphries are dominating headlines as favourites to win the competition.

And former world champion Wright knows plenty of other nations could steal the spotlight too.

He admitted: “Yeah, they have not just been talking about the two Lukes — they’ve been talking about the Wales team as well.

“Gezzy [Price] and Jonny [Clayton], they are brilliant — when they have won it in the past, they have played exceptional.

“The Ireland team as well — Josh [Rock] and Daryl [Gurney], the two youngsters — they are fearless.

“So, it will be dangerous. Obviously, there are a lot of teams that can come out the group stages and do a lot of damage.”
